It's been nearly two weeks since we received the tragic news of the loss of one of our senior students. I cannot express how proud I am of our students, faculty, staff, and the Centre communities for the way they have come together to support each other. The Herington and Marion Districts both sent additional counselors to Centre to help our students and staff deal with the loss of Michelle and with the uncertainty of the recovery of Dwayne. Herington sent one of their counselors back for two days to help the teachers and staff deal with the loss as well. Teachers and Staff met with me Tuesday morning to go over our crisis plan and then had to go to their classes and try and teach class while having to deal with the loss themselves. The outpouring of support from our neighboring districts has been overwhelming. When our basketball teams arrived in their locker rooms for the Herington tournament, they all had a Gatorade and flower in each of their lockers to remember Michelle. The cheer team from White City sent a beautiful flower arrangement to our cheer team and the Marion STUCO sent a beautiful plant to our student council. Fund raisers were immediately planned, and funds began to pour in. The Centre PTO raised over $2600 at the tailgate they sponsored at the basketball game last week. An additional $2500 was raised through donations at Junior High Basketball game and Christmas Concert last Thursday. The JH girls' basketball team from Gossell donated nearly $200 while the Gossell JH boys team donated $100, and the JH football team donated an additional $100 to the families. Several businesses also held fund raisers and donated proceeds from sales to the families as well. We were notified Thursday that Dwayne has lost his brain function and that he would be donating his organs. The family invited students and staff to attend Dwayne's Honor Walk Friday afternoon and we had 61 students and staff that showed their respect by attending the honor walk. Tragedies like we have gone through either bring out the worst in people or the best. Everyone involved with the Centre District showed their best as they all came together to support the families and our students and staff. I can't begin to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our district during this time. As usual, I am Cougar Proud of our Centre schools and communities that came together. While we continue to mourn the loss of two terrific young adults, we are blessed to have known them and continue to pray for their families. Thank you again for all the support and love extended to the Centre District.
Centre students and staff are asked to wear a red shirt tomorrow in support of Dwayne. Red was his favorite color.
We have been notified that there will be an honor walk for Dwayne tomorrow as they take him to Kansas City where he will donate his organs. An honor walk is held as the organ donor leaves the hospital on their way to Kansas City to make the donation. After extensive testing today, it has been determined that Dwayne’s brain activity has stopped. The family has informed us that he wanted to be an organ donor. We will supply transportation for high school students who wish to attend the honor walk that currently is scheduled at Wesley medical center tomorrow at 2:00 pm. However, we will not know for sure if that schedule will change until tomorrow morning. If it does change, we will let students and parents know when it will be rescheduled. If your student would like to attend, please send a note giving permission. The JH basketball games, and music concert will go on as scheduled tomorrow night.
BOE Agenda December 19, 2023
I want to congratulate the Centre PTO for their tailgate at last night's basketball game against Solomon. They sponsored the tailgate to raise funds for the Brasch and Moenning families whose children were involved in the tragic car accident last week. They were able to raise 2654 dollars that will be split between the two families. The Solomon girl's basketball coach brought his entire team through to get Frito Pies after their game to help out. Thank you again to our amazing PTO!
This is a reminder the Centre Christmas Concert will be this Thursday, December 14th at 7:00 PM. The Centre Junior High basketball teams will play host to Gossell with the games beginning at 4:00 the same night. Admission to the games will be by donation with all proceeds going to the Brasch and Moenning families. Come early for the games and stay late for the concert. Let's pack the house!!!

We appreciate your generous support at this difficult time. Donations can be made at Tampa State Bank, Tampa, Cottonwood Valley Bank, Lincolnville, Barnes Grocery, Herington, or the District Office. There will also be collection jars at the home basketball games next week. A correction on the initial post of sending checks to the Central Office. It is with a heavy heart I inform you that Michelle Brasch, a senior at Centre High School was killed in a traffic accident outside of Marion last night. We have had counselors from surrounding schools here this morning to help our team of Social Workers, teachers, and staff help our students and each other through this tragic time. Dwayne Moenning was injured in the accident and is in a Wichita Hospital in critical but stable condition. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families during this very difficult time.
